October marks Black History Month (BHM) when we celebrate the achievements of Black Britons.  The month is an opportunity to develop new curriculum resources, provide additional learning opportunities and celebrate as a whole school.

Activities will take place throughout the month including assemblies, tutor time quizzes and Philosophy 4 Children (P4C) enquires, which will all focus on themes relating to Black history. Across subjects, students are learning about the contribution and achievements of distinguished mathematicians, scientists, artists, sports people, musicians and engineers.  In English Year 7 are studying ‘The Jumbies’; a work on Caribbean folklore by Tracey Baptiste. In Year 8 they are considering Steinbeck’s presentation of segregation through Crooks, an African American character and Year 9 are using Amnesty International resources to  study the Black Lives Matter movement.
